Drop shadows use Microsoft transparency, not PostScript transparency. This technology was invented by Microsoft for display only. It does not print well, does not translate to PostScript transparency and looks particularly bad in PDFs. Even Microsoft admits it's bad: The transparent objects cannot be printed correctly in PowerPoint.

The latter Microsoft's own method, rather than Adobe's doesn't use PostScript and does produce good results.

This didn't work for me. However, once they're in InDesign, everything is really pixelated! I changed the Display Performance to High and it gets a little better, but still pixelated. Is this just a quirk of InDesign?
