Rename WindowsUpdateAgentx EXE and run it. Download and extract rootsupd Install rootsupd. Run Windows Update. Anything wrong there? I assume nothing has to be put in a specific directory because the OP didn't specifically say so. When it says to extract something to "the WUA directory", does that mean an arbitrary directory you make yourself just to help organize the files, or is there an actual WUA directory somewhere that these files are supposed to go in?
EXE to install And why do you have to rename it, anyway? Is Windows Update simply completely dead for Windows , now? It seems this thread has been dormant since November, but I would hope someone before me would touch on that if they discovered that to be the case. Anyway, I hope someone is able to either figure out something I'm doing wrong or determine that it just doesn't work any more. I've never participated in these forums before - I've made my account simply so I can post here and try to get to the bottom of this.
Not sure about the "why rename" but irrelevant. Please report back. I followed it all the way through with a new Windows SP4 install and it worked perfectly.
The only thing I did differently was installing Update Rollup 1 version 2 for Windows Service Pack 4 before anything else, although I don't think that will make any difference. In the end it shouldn't matter though That was the ticket! Thank you very much! I don't know why my situation wouldn't work with simply running WUA. While trying to fix a problem with Outlook, I was told by tech help to reinstall Windows professional. I have seen this problem addressed elsewhere, but have yet to find a fix.
Windows professional was already installed on the computer and worked fine. Only in the reinstallation is it not working. No matter how I boot up, off of the cd, off of boot up floppies, or with nothing, it starts to load, and then a black screen appears and it is says setup is resuming..
I have left it alone for 24 hours and it doens't finish. I have run the emergency repair and it says it fixes it, but then still locks up at the same place. Is there anything else to do besides a format? Thanks so much for any help you may have to offer. So you're trying to reinstall into existing partition with 2k already on there? How have you run emergency repair when you're quarter way through a reinstall?
If that has same problem, I'd be looking at hardware remove all unnecesary - particularly, use one memory stick if more , and try install again. Thanks so much for responding so quickly. I am not certain how far through the total install it gets. During the initial re-installation phase, i marked that I only wanted to do an upgrade, not a clean installation.
